[LinuxBIOS] cmos.layout field meanings.

For my design review I'm trying to document the meaning of the various fields in CMOS RAM. I've done some grepping and found limited use of the generated CMOS_VSTART_ and CMOS_VLEN_ definitions which are generated from the board's cmos.layout. Also, I've found a number of inconsistencies regarding checksum calculation. For example CMOS_VSTART_check_sum is defined in cmos.layout as 984 for some (most?) boards but the file pc80/mc146818rtc.h defines the checksum range as bytes 16 (PC_CKS_RANGE_START) thru 45 (PC_CKS_RANGE_END) which is then used by the rtc_init to verify CMOS RAM contents. Why wouldn't cmos.layout be used for both? I'm sensing some bit position dependent coupling between execution in CAR and execution from RAM using different definitions which may cause problems if cmos.layout is changed for a board. It appears there may be some additional coupling for bootloaders as well? (e.g. boot_first, boot_second, etc.) Is there a document I can read to help me understand this? Am I looking at this wrong? [LinuxBIOS] SMBIOS tables or alternate.

Because of a need to be compatible with other systems I'm seeing a requirement to support SMBIOS tables. I did some quick searching and didn't find much regarding this subject on the LinuxBIOS web site or the source code. Specifically, the _SM_ pattern (SMMBIOS spec) needs to be embedded along with DMI blocks such as System Information (0x01), Base Board Information (0x02), System Encloser or Chassis (0x03) at a minimum. The commandline utility dumpSmbios (or similar) would be used to retrieve this information. >From an application perspective this is important information. The same application needs to run on platforms having different BIOSes -- some commercial, some LinuxBIOS. The hardware type and version information is important for maintaining and deploying the application. Because of this, the application needs a consistent mechanism for retrieving the information I listed above. Any suggestions or alternatives? Thanks, Steve

[LinuxBIOS] Tyan S2891 LinuxBios VGA ROM Question.

I had a question about the linuxbios build tutorial for the Tyan S2891. (http://linuxbios.org/Tyan_S2891_Build_Tutorial) The tutorial mentioned to concatenate the VGA video ROM from Tyan's original bios with the tyan-s2891.rom from buildrom. The question I have is after reading http://linuxbios.org/VGA_support it seems as though I do not need to concatenate a video bios because i have an nvidea addon VGA card. I do not want to use the on board VGA chip. Now after I try to flashrom the "tyan-s2891.rom" file, I get a size mismatch because the rom built is only 988K and I have a 1024K rom. Is it necessary that I concatenate a 36K VGA rom? If not, how to I get buildrom to build a 1024K rom rather than a 988K rom?
