Lets make it a pretty cool tool also for upgrading normal pc-bios from remote with linux. I like the function-pointer arcutecture very much. So we could enhance it by adding a function-pointer for unprotect(*bios) and protect(*bios). Then an *universal* algorithm will call according to the commandline-params read(*bios) for backup, unprotect(), is_unprotected(), erase(), is_empty() [if not, try to write backup. verify()], write(), verify(). The function-pointers for write() read() and the like point to the implementation dependend on the detected flash. Also function calls within the write or erase have to use the function-fointers, so that by servicing the function-pointer table and the specialized routines, fine granular support for any flash can be writen. So the ST-Way of unprotecting can be used for all st devices of the family. So we save code and become very flexible. The Problem with the actual code is that some routines simply write some data out to issue jedec-erase instaed of calling the erase-method pointed to by the function-pointer erase(). Have you ever thought of reverse-engineering the bios-flaser of compaq using a debugger (does the effort make sense?) Do you have a service-manual? there are some more not assembled connectors. E.G. P115 between Super-IO and ATI-Graphics whicht seems to be interessting (maybe gpios of super io or I2C/SMBUS)... Thanks for your tips. Hi! thank you for your info. Could you document your steps a little bit? Ok, I thought about closing the jumper P34. The AppNote of st says one only has to rise pin1 (reset) to vid=12V to temporarily unprotect the flash. -> but 12V can cause harm to other devices, and I do not know the circuitry of the board. So this feature seems to be jumper P34. I will try. Fortunately I managed to rewrite the old bios in the unporotected sectors (the protected sectors were not modified by erase and write). So reboot should be safe. Attached you find my coreboot.bin together with the filo config. (The Flash is damn small, one wants to have more space. Which upgrades are supported? If I solder a socket I easily could upgrade to a bigger flash) Is my coreboot kosher? does it boot? Hello, while fixing the dangerous situation for my boxes I made little improvements to flashrom. It is still impossible to flash ST 29F002BT because unprotecting does not work for now. But read/write/probe does. [flashrom] unusual SST39SF020 chip

First of all, I have a very rough (and ugly!) patch that makes flashrom work on FreeBSD. I tried it for reading BIOS image and it worked. I have an old system with MP2-BX-X, please see some description here: http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/3686/delta_mp2.html It is based on 440BX chipset. Visually I was able to identify that BIOS flash chip is SST39SF020, but flashrom didn't initially recognize it. Some debugging showed that it has JEDEC ids 0x25 for vendor and 0xE5 for device. Very unusual. So I decided to let you know. The data that flashrom read are very similar to the data in vendor provided bios .bin. There are differences in a chunk of about 12k size, I guess this is where bios stored some config data. -- Andriy Gapon
