Try adding

delay(5);

(5 second delay) in main in filo.c (if you use grub). Put it after the
init()
call.

If that does not help, try 10 or 15 seconds.

Even modern sata drives need that 5 second delay in our case, on the tyan
s2881 and s2882...

When I used AUTOBOOT, I used a 60 second delay, and the IDE still was 
timing out.
