What's the usage for the CAR-PC?
GPS navigation?

Hello guys.
I'm thinking about create (another one) Car-PC and I want to use linuxbios to improve the boot time. Is there any place you can recomend I can read about the basics of this project? I mean how it works, etc? Just to give me an outline before I start to dig into it? BTW, I want to use miniITX boards as the Via EPIA.
The website is sorely out of date, and the source tree has just gone through a *major* overhaul. In that vein, the source for the epia version isn't functional (as I understand it right now). But will in a few weeks when it gets cleaned up. The website will be revamped when some of the volunteers (like myself) get to it. We've been really busy as well. I'm not nearly as knowledgeable in the arena here about the actual functioning of LinuxBIOS, but there are plenty here who are. I would suggest going through the mailing list archive as start. There was a great FAQ type submission a few months ago that helped me understand what was going on.

The telematics/Car-PC's we've been designing also have CDMA/GPRS, CAM, WiFi and WiMax soon, USB2.0, 1394, 10/100 ethernet, Bluetooth and Cardbus. The telematics/Car-PC's allow the driver and passengers to have real time navigation, voice over IP, and high speed satellite connectivity to the internet while the vehicle is in motion. The driver can be following the on screen maps while the kids in the back seat can be watching a Mpeg movie or playing their Xbox or Playstation2 network games. The telematics/Car-PC's will also allow for full speed video teleconferencing and several other data services while the vehicle is cruising down the interstate or stuck in city traffic.

"WiMAX is a standards-based wireless technology that provides high-throughput broadband connections over long distances. WiMAX can be used for a number of applications, including "last mile" broadband connections, hotspot and cellular backhaul, and high-speed enterprise connectivity for businesses.
An implementation of the IEEE 802.16 standard, WiMAX provides metropolitan area network connectivity at speeds of up to 75 Mb/sec. WiMAX systems can be used to transmit signal as far as 30 miles. However, on the average a WiMAX base-station installation will likely cover between three to five miles."

The games are played on their respective game consoles. You connect the consoles to the telematics/car-pc via 10/100 ethernet. The telematics/car-pc acts as a router between the game console and internet via cdma/gprs, satellite and/or WiMax.

Is that some kind of VNC/RDP ?

In the case of game consoles the telematics computer just acts as a cdma/gprs or satellite modem/router/gateway that interfaces to game consoles via their network adapter. So just to be clear, there is a telematics computer that has all the (outside of vehicle) wireless services with the capability to have game consoles (like Xbox, PS2, Zodiac etc) connected to it via 10/100, Bluetooth etc.(inside the vehicle).

So you still need to have one Xbox/Ps2 on the car ?

Yes. I can't imagine Sony or MS licensing anything for less then a bazillion $$ to be able to build compatible gaming hardware into a telematics unit or anything else.

No, nothing like this fancy now. Maybe later but the idea is to monitor the car variables, ambient variables, control personalization features like lights, perhaps play digital music, DVDs, etc.
