Building ChromeOS from source

Hello!
An interesting thought came to me yesterday. And is still ringing a
loud sound today.

Is it possible to obtain and build ChromeOS from source?

I freely admit that just once (or twice) I did look at building all of
Linux from source, that was back during the same period that the list
concerned itself with the LinuxBIOS project. By the time I'd finished
studying what was involved, I found it was easier to customize the
distribution I do use then to build the actual OS from source. And
that was after being made aware of the amazing Linux From Scratch
project series.

If this is the wrong place to ask this Ron, Stefan, then please advise.

Hello!
Thank you Matt. That does indeed confirm it is doable. But a
referenced thread on the page also tells me that doing so locally
might not be a good idea. It seems a builder needed to update his
cloud system to practically very big sizes on memory just to build the
image he had in mind.

At the moment I have not decided which way I'm going to go for this.
Now that I know it can be done, I'll continue to think about it.

Bear in mind that you can build ChromiumOS, not ChromeOS, from source:

It's generally assumed that the device running ChromeOS/ChromiumOS is
not very powerful, e.g. a low/mid-range laptop, and building a modern
OS and web browser from source is a pretty huge task even for powerful
desktop and workstation systems. The large memory recommendation is
just for the linking step when building the Chromium web browser. You
can do it on a machine with less RAM, it will just be very slow.

ChromiumOS is based on Gentoo which might be better suited for your
use case. ChromeOS/ChromiumOS is really slick for the use model it's
intended for, namely building and deploying a simple and secure Linux
distro to web-centric (and now Android-centric) devices.
