Hey Merlin, I was taking and keeping track of the pledges for Talos, so I'd be happy to continue.
Martin
I just wanted to bring this back up for discussion. Raptor is chipping in funding for over half of the development work, and Martin is matching pledges, so if there's interest in this port your contributions will go a long way, but it still depends on community interest. Are you willing to contribute to this development project? It is a limited time offer, so the quicker we can reach the relatively low goal to get this work underway the better. :-)
Thanks!

A quick update.
As of today, we have $10,250 pledged out of $20,000 required to start work on the OpenBMC support for KGPE-D16 systems using coreboot. Raptor is, as before, contributing an additional $25,000+ toward development should the $20,000 community goal be reached.
If you would like to help get this port started, please contact Martin Roth (gaumless@gmail.com) with information on what you would like to pledge. This offer is time limited; we are looking to end the offer in the next month or so, so if this is something you would like to see please step up and contribute something to this goal!
As a general reminder, the KGPE-D16 is the last, most powerful owner-controllable X86 workstation / server class machine available. It is still in production along with its Opteron CPUs, so it occupies a unique position in coreboot's tree. Providing a libre BMC for this system could help adoption of coreboot in server environments, strengthening its position some in the market.
Thank you!

A brief update on the funding status of the BMC port for the KGPE-D16:
We have posted a dedicated page with details on the port offer, who is funding the work thus far, and current funding level here:
https://www.raptorengineering.com/coreboot/kgpe-d16-bmc-port-offer.php
While we did see an increase in pledges, unfortunately we had one individual revise their pledge amount downward since the last post, yielding a slight net loss from the prior funding level. We are currently sitting at around half of the needed community support, and around 80% of the total funding goal.
If you would like to see this happen, please contact Martin Roth at gaumless@gmail.com to make a pledge to this community-driven crowdfunding campaign.
Thanks!

With the campaign ending in a little over a week, we are currently sitting at around 61% of the needed community support, and around 85% of the total funding goal. Full details are available here:

Hey maybe a stupid question but why not port OpenBMC to a pci-e card instead? then it would have wider compatibility instead of just being for a single board.

The costs would increase correspondingly, and we highly doubt that the new funding goals would be met for such a venture.
Additionally, some features could not be easily duplicated as the wiring is already embedded inside modern mainboard PCBs. For instance, it would be very difficult if not impossible to use the internal RS-232 interface over such a system, requiring that the PCIe card also emulate specific devices to the host system, and in turn that the host system would require card-specific drivers and OS configuration.
Did I mention that this port would also be applicable to the KCMA-D8 and, theoretically, most of ASUS's v4 BMC boards? You're getting quite a bit for the money already! :-)

That's great news. I notice that the goal amounts for the serial console access and thermal management have increased. Why is that?

As we looked more closely into those two features, additional unexpected complexity became apparent. Since they were not yet funded, we updated the goals to more accurately reflect the anticipated work to get them working correctly. In comparison, all of the funded goals are "locked" and cannot be changed.
Thanks!

Hey Tim could you elaborate on the IBM OpenBMC stretch goal? Technical details, benefits etc as I don't have any POWER systems I don't know what it is.
- Thanks

The IBM OpenBMC fork is under active development by IBM; as a result, it uses a completely different userspace and a newer kernel, among other differences. It aims to be a less specialized BMC firmware than the Facebook version, i.e. more of a direct replacement for the proprietary AMI firmware typically shipped on OEM mainboards.
As you can imagine, this adds a significant amount of size and complexity to the resultant firmware, and I expect new hardware will need to be created to hold and execute the resultant images. Furthermore, attempting to execute a port and upstream it when the underlying source tree is in constant flux adds significant effort and overall cost, therefore we are only looking into this as a stretch goal versus risking not having any libre firmware available at all for these systems due to cost constraints.
Thanks!

After campaign close, we have funded three of the four stretch goals! In addition to providing the base BMC port, we will be adding support for the KGPE-D16 BMC to Flashrom, adding support for the IPMI remote serial console, and enabling BMC-based hardware thermal management.
Pledges are currently being collected and work will start after pledge collection has been completed. Thank you all for your support and we hope to be able to make the KGPE-D16 a worthy addition to any security and freedom conscious datacenter!

Are there any status updates on this?
I noticed that some people still haven't paid up and we're a couple grand short.
- Thanks

That is correct; unfortunately we're still waiting for the remaining payments. I'm checking with Martin to see if we've had any success with collecting the last payments, but if we haven't been able to collect by the end of the month the most likely action will be to drop one of the stretch goals and move forward without it.

A brief update on the funding status of the BMC port for the KGPE-D16:
As of today we have reached around 89% of the needed community support, and around 95% of the total base goal! To see if some of the stretch goals may be of interest to the larger community, we have extended the campaign one time only to end on March 10, but will start work on the base goal as soon as the base funding level has been reached.
As always, full details are available here:

Have you guys contacted the FSF or other free software non profits that might be interested in funding it?
Yes, the FSF sent out an email on Friday, and that's helped get the community funding portion from 60% up to where we are now at at 92%.
