With the hard SPI hang now resolved, the D16 has full debug logging enabled, which has allowed the race condition causing these spurious test failures to become apparent. In the log it appears that during multicore startup in ramstage something causes a deadlock condition; my initial suspects would be the console spinlock or one of the NVRAM spinlocks. Suggestions as to other potential causes (e.g. if something like this has happened on other boards) is always welcome!
