Hello, I've been lurking on the list for quite some time, and felt a need to reply to this post. I use dental floss underneath my PLCC's. Lay 3 or 4 inches centered in the bottom of the socket, from one corner to it's diagonal neighbor. Plug the chip in as usual. When you want to remove it, pull up on the free ends of the floss. Not as cool as the pushpins, but it works. [LinuxBIOS] My very own homemade BIOS saviour

Hi! after some time being absent from here while attending o some other pressing issues, i'm back to LinuxBIOS :) My NOVA-4899R needs a proper bios and i'm confident that this time it would get better. But as always, problem is swaping the BIOS with enough confidence. After ruining onf my my precious BIOS chips, I decided on a radical approach. Here is the photo (sorry for the hosting), and the explanation follows: http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/7942/detail01hd8.jpg This is composed of a BIOS with a PLCC socket soldered on top (all pins except #CE) Then, the #CE signal is intercepted and routed to a switch, which in turn selects the upper or lower chip. After the first boot and using uniflash as a detecting software for the parts, only one of the chips was correctly identified. Then it struct me that while one chip was connected to the controller, the other had the pin 'free floating'. This was solved by pulling the two #CE pins from the flash devices to +5V. This is a very dumb rig, but hey, it works. I haven't flashed any on the chips yet, but now uniflash does detect them correctly. I'll be offline until the 20th but after that i'll try to post more detailed pictures of it, along with a proper schematics. Thanks for listeing to all this crap :) Luis Correia

I haven't spilled any on any pins yet. You don't need very much glue to make it work. I don't know how conductive super glue is, I don't think it is very, but it might be an interesting experiment. I'll pull out the datasheet and put some glue between D0 and D1 or some pins that won't be shorting Vcc to ground and see if it affects it. [LinuxBIOS] Problem to Support SuperIO Winbond W83977AF

Hi to all, I have create a linuxbios file for my embeded mother board call Adavantech PCM-5823, and I have some problem with the fonctionality of the superIO winbond W83977AF/TF, when I put LinuxBIOS in my chip, I have nothing on screen and no information on the COM port. In linuxBIOS I used the superIO winbond W83977TF. According to the documentation of the winbond W83977AF and W83977TF the chip is virtually identical, but the are some difference on the number of I/O programable port. For now I'm blocked. If somebody has a solution for my problem, I thank it by advance. Regards Ccases

I've implemented an idea in an attempt to make hot plugging safer. I imagine it is something that people have already done, but have been too embarrassed to post. ( I, fortunately, have no shame ). It involves taking the little push tacks ubiquitous in the office environment and clipping off the needle point. I then super glue them to the top of my flash (I only recommend this for PLCC. With DIPs, and whatever else, you are probably better off with the chip pullers). I have not had a knob fall off (yet). With the PLCC I think this is a much safer way to hotplug than using a chip puller. If I ever do have one fall off, I'll have a future post about recovery techniques :o). The most important point is to shave off the resulting nub left when cutting off the needle point so that you have a flat surface to glue. I recommend a dremel tool grinder. Although I've had success using a scissor blade (takes a long time). If you have a BIOS sticker on top, you'll need to peel that off and clean off the glue thoroughly. One of the drawbacks is that the chip part number is covered up. If you have several chips types to deal with, this can be a problem. I've implemented a color coding system that works well since I only have a couple of chip types to deal with. FWIW, Randy

This came up on irc (#openbios(a)freenode.net) now... I asked about the 3.3V vs 5V roms, and i only got further confusion... This is one of the later lines written there: < segher> there are SPI chips with at least three different voltages. same for CFI. FWH, i dunno, FWH is some wacko intel shit < segher> and then there are flash chips from before CFI, too < segher> the older of which require *two* voltages < segher> oh and there also are LPC flash roms If anyone can bring clarity, please do, and please make it extensive enough so that afterwards everything can be bundled together and stuck on the wiki.
