Hi,
to keep a record of the IRC conversation we had yesterday, here is the stuff I said (in slightly rewritten form):
Ideal conditions for supporting a board in v3 are: - documentation freely available - board available in the market for the next few months - socketed BIOS - already supported well in v2.
Chipset choice (availability in the last field means end-user availability of boards for a recent processor): - SIS 966 family: Source available, no docs, vendor cooperative, almost unavailable. - Nvidia CK804 family: Source available, no docs, no cooperation from vendor, availability rather limited. - Nvidia MCP55 family: Source available, no docs, no cooperation from vendor, readily available. - AMD 8100 family: Source available, docs available, vendor cooperative, almost unavailable. (Can be tested in the freely downloadable SimNow.) - AMD/ATI newer chipsets: No source available, no docs available, vendor cooperative, readily available. (Given AMD's recent track record for opening documentation we probably can expect improvements regarding docs and source). - VIA K8T890: Source available, docs available slowly with NDA (Rudolf has them), vendor somewhat cooperative, availability limited. - VIA K8M890: No source, no docs available yet (Rudolf is working on this), vendor somewhat cooperative, readily available. (Rumored to be similar to K8T890.)
Unless things at the chipset front change significantly till the end of April, we are probably stuck with MCP55.
Board choice: - Gigabyte M57SLI: Multiple revisions, newer ones (rev 2.x) have soldered SPI flash behind a IT8716F LPC-to-SPI translation chip. Availability prognosis is good. Limitations of the M57SLI (though I can't offer a K8 board supported better in v2): Rev. 2.x boards have SPI behind IT8716F, can only map fixed 512 kByte of ROM into address space. That means we have to rewrite LAR walking completely to work with SPI chips above 512 kByte because we can't map them directly and have to read them byte-by-byte. Then again, if we are willing to live with 512 kByte ROMs on the M57SLI, it should work out just fine. Streaming decompression (like in v2) does not solve the LAR walking problems, because the LAR walk routine expects a memory mapped LARchive. The rewritten LAR walking will be very ugly in v3: either you consume horrible amounts of stack space (~1100 bytes more) or you write a streaming version of strncmp() and wrap most accesses to LAR headers in functions or you shadow/copy all of ROM directly after RAM is enabled. Since you can't map the ROM in memory (except for copying/shadowing), so you have to read it byte-wise and give the decompression routine a callback function which will fetch the ROM contents byte-wise. That makes the decompression a lot slower and it needs additional scratch space. In fact, the additional scratch space requirements can be bigger than the compressed size of the file in ROM, so there are possibly only disadvantages of the streaming decompression method over the shadow/copy method. Of course, the streaming LAR walk and decompression also increases boot block size a lot. So if the person doing the K8 port is willing to limit himself to 512 kByte ROMs on the M57SLI, he avoids all those nasty issues.
Regards, Carl-Daniel
AMD 690G would make a lot of sense if all the docs are available.
The 690G has integrated graphics along with great graphics driver support for Linux from AMD.
Mainboards are readily available in volume from several vendors.
The 690G chipset will also be available for years to come.
Plenty of eager community talent available to port Coreboot.
Why aren't all the docs out yet?

The MSI board only has 150 MB/s SATA-I, so I'd like to pick one of the Asus boards. The M2V-MX SE seems to use soldered SPI flash, so it is not an ideal target. That leaves us with the M2V-MX.

Hmm what is the problem with 150MB/s if hdd can do 50mb/s ? I think the socketed flash on MSI is a win.

AFAIK the old SATA standard can't do NCQ (Native Command Queuing) and a few other desired features.
The Asus M2V-MX and the MSI board should both have socketed flash according to the board photos.

I'd really start with an already existing board from v2, we don't want to complicate things by doing a completely new port. Porting a v2 K8 board will be non-trivial enough already, I think.
So maybe e.g. ASUS A8V-E SE (Rudolf has one), or ASUS A8V-E Deluxe (I have one), which Rudolf has the datasheets for (K8T890) and which already work in v2. Both boards currently even run from the same code.

And they are not commercially available anymore. One of the criteria for a v3 port was commercial availability. Even if they were available, they are socket 939 boards and support only DDR RAM instead of DDR2. If that means we have to create support for a new board in v2, so be it. Rudolf wrote that K8T890 and K8M890 seem to be very similar.

I'll get either.
Don't worry too much about soldered SPI flash.

Applicable chipsets: P4M900+VT8237S and K8M890+VT8237S
In order to perform on-board programming to the serial flash soldered on motherboard, south bridge SPI bus has to be in high impedance states while applying external SPI signals to the soldered serial flash memory. VIA VT8237S embeds such high impedance capability. The following figure details the reference schematic for serial flash on-board solution with VIA VT8237S chipset.
[..schematic..] -->8--
Of course any SPI flash programmer will work, and it would be easy enough to add support for http://www.design-wings.com/i2c/u2c12.html boards (USD 69) to flashrom for remote programming.

Supports 1.8v DDR2 SDRAM DIMM Due to the High Performance Memory design, motherboards or system configurations may or may not operate smoothly at the JEDEC (Joint Electron Device Engineering Council) standard settings (BIOS Default on the motherboard) such as DDR2 voltage, memory speeds and memory timing. Please confirm and adjust your memory setting in the BIOS accordingly for better system stability.
Wtf?

Ouch. Does it cost something as well or is it "just" the effort to go through the datasheet request procedure? I think asking for the data sheet just in case we'd use it later may save us the waiting time if we ever need it.

Indeed. The wording is horrible. They should have written "Please note that some non-standard high performance DIMMs may require voltages above the standard 1.8V. Please set DIMM voltage to the values recommended by the DIMM manufacturer." http://www.kingston.com/hyperx/products/khx_ddr2.asp has a listing of some of these non-standard DIMMs.

No it just cost time and polite wordings ;) I asked today if I can get it.

Ok, I managed to get it. Now I have datasheet for VT8237S too. We can freely choose a board of our choice. It has the SPI controller on it, perhaps first step would be to get the flashing working?

Yes, but the current flashrom SPI abstraction is rather unsuited for SPI hosts which are different from the IT8716F. I will try to remedy that over the course of the next few months together with ICH[789] SPI support for flashrom. Even after the flashrom SPI code has been restructured, it will be difficult to implement SPI support without docs. AFAICS the VT8237S docs are not yet floating around the net.

Well maybe we can do some hack to make it work.

They wont be, the chipset is quite new (2006) I think. But I can add the support and you can adjust it to fit the generic layer (ITE ICH VIA)
I think I will go for Asus M2V-MX SE it has SPI in flash, VT8237S and K8M890. If we decide soon I can buy it on Monday, I will have way around the shop, I need to buy smth for university lab anyway (yes they are open on Holiday :)
The board has serial line and SPI in socket. I checked some electronics stores and they have some SPI chips in stock (cheapest around 1EUR). I need to check this more, because the cheapest have no online datasheet.
Thanks, Rudolf

Hi all,
I bought the board (Asus M2V-MX SE). I put the the photos http://assembler.cz/m2vse/ here. Sorry its quite late in the night so the photo quality is not so good. The back side detail are the SPI pins of the DIP8 socket. And yes the board has DIP8 SPI flash.

I bought some spare 512KB SPI flashes today. A25L40PT-F (amic) one costs like 1 EUR.
I ran just few simple commands. More on Friday.

I have now received datasheets+pg for: K8M890 and VT8237A
Asus M2V-MX SE, K8M890 (38 ?) MSI K9VGM-V, K8M890 (38 ?)
M2V-MX SE has VT8237S, K9VGM-V has VT8237A.
I'll get either.
Don't worry too much about soldered SPI flash.

Thanks for digging this up. However, as long as Rudolf doesn't have VT8237S datasheets, we are limited to VT8237A boards.
