I recently found someone who could do the work of modifying the motherboard, Harald kindly posted me the chip.
The machine came back and it would not boot with the switch up
I then probably made a mistake, I used the BIOS itself to dump the factory BIOS to several floppies; then flipped the switch and wrote the factory BIOS to the new chip. The machine now boots from either BIOS.
Using flashrom to detect the chip I get:
Calibrating delay loop... 853M loops per second. OK. No coreboot table found. Found chipset "NVIDIA MCP55", enabling flash write... OK. Found board "GIGABYTE GA-M57SLI-S4": enabling flash write... I have tried coreboot v2 and v3; and have also tried compiling 32 bit on another machine and copyied the binary across.
Both by machines have recent compilers, nothing earlier that gcc-4 series, but get no errors or warnings. Also a very recent glibc version 2.6.
I tried writing the LinuxBios from a floppy, but the BIOS refuses saying there is a checksum error

Could someone please give me a clue of either what I have missed out, or how to proceed?

Please specify which flash chips you are using. The snipped logs are extremely misleading, especially because the RDID output contradicts the MX25L4005 claim in the mail subject. The RDID you are seeing is from a Pm25LV040 (7f 9d 7e).
The block diagram shows the BIOS connected directly to the 570-SLI and not via the 8716
That block diagram is correct for v1.x of the board.
Could someone please give me a clue of either what I have missed out, or how to proceed?
We need to know the exact flash chip types before we can proceed.

Can you try the patch below? We need full output from flashrom -V.

Thanks for testing. The output should be mostly identical on the first look, but not exactly identical. If it is exactly identical, the executed binary didn't contain the patch. I'm looking for the following output changes:

and there should be three additional lines near the end:

should become

and there should be three additional lines near the end:

Sorry. Think I may have got it right now :-(
Yes, indeed.
Thanks for the logs. You hit a bug in the existing code which was uncovered by my patch. Can you change the second line of probe_spi() in spi.c from uint8_t manuf_id; to uint32_t manuf_id; and post full results for the original chip again? This time it should find a generic PMC SPI chip.
Regards, Carl-Daniel

This is rather strange. You're using an MX chip but it identifies itself as PMC. Is the RDID byteorder messed up?

I'm pretty sure the byteorder is OK. Even if the byteorder was messed up, a Macronix chip should have 0xC2 in there somewhere.
Three possible explanations: - the switch does not work as intended - the chip has been relabeled - we are reading garbage from the SuperIO.

Am amazing prediction :-)
Thanks. I like it when I'm right ;-)

Can you try the patch I posted in a separate thread with subject "[PATCH] flashrom: Support Pm25LV*"?
I only need normal flashrom output (without -V) unless a chip is detected as "PMC unknown SPI chip". If it works for you, can you please ack the patch? More details about acking at http://www.coreboot.org/Development_Guidelines sections "Sign-off Procedure" http://www.coreboot.org/Development_Guidelines#Sign-off_Procedure and "Reviews".

Difference at least, but something is wrong. The factory BIOS for the M57SLI is 512kb and would not fit in the 256KB flash part.

Oh - but what is on the actual chips?
It may seem like there is nothing at all written on top of them, but with good lighting and a magnifying glass the etching should be readable.

It would be very interesting to know what the vendor flash tool (awdflash?) says about the chips. Could you post details to the list? It would help me to verify the code.

Please specify which flash chips you are using. The snipped logs are extremely misleading, especially because the RDID output contradicts the MX25L4005 claim in the mail subject. The RDID you are seeing is from a Pm25LV040 (7f 9d 7e).
We need to know the exact flash chip types before we can proceed.

Sorry for length of this
No problem, we are used to even bigger mails. And in your case, I explicitly requested it. Thanks.
Coreboot-v2 release 3088. This is the factory chip, I think
OK. Any chance to find out what's written on the factory chip?

The RDID results are consistent between RDID calls.

EDIT: I just saw your mail from a few minutes ago. The output of the patched flashrom will prove enlightening.
