No, I believe that might be fine as all the memory sticks are identical and perfectly working with the original bios. Please note that I have 4x512MB sticks on this motherboard, which is therefore fully populated.

* likely issues with irqtables or mptable. * please note that the system initialize UP, not SMP. * working: VGA (on the pcie 16x slot), serial. * not-working: Ethernet (Marvel chip, same irq as the 3ware), IDE dma, USB, Firewire, please note that I was able to boot from an IDE drive, but I was getting some DMA issues here and there, using a cf2ide adapter.

And there is your problem. You don't need to worry about IRQ tables ever again. We have to fix the MP table. Until you fix the MP table, you will get the oops on the drivers. They're failing as the IRQ setup is failing.
No amount of fiddling with the IRQ tables is really going to help. We have to get the MP tables fixed. If you focus your efforts there, I think you will be ok.
I followed some of the IRC traffic. Don't worry about your vendor strings, they are probably not your problem.
Try to enable all the debug prints you can in-kernel that relate to APIC (NOT ACPI-- APIC). see arch/i386/pci/acpi.c I believe.

Unfortunately, I have changed sig to "PCMP", and I still get a very similar output. I might be able to provide a bios output, but at this time I had to remove the opteron as it was making the system unstable (kernel oops after a little while, could be related to overheating perhaps).

Right, sorry for the incorrect info, you need PCMP but ... we really need to resolve the exact reason for that error message, and it's really not going to get the problem solved until we do.

Unfortunately LB doesn't boot on the x2 configuration, probably because my non-ecc memory prevents LB from booting (Unknown Trwt), it would make it much easier for me to troubleshoot if we could identify first what is causing this error. If we can not, then I have to switch memory and cpu between tries, which is making testing much more time consuming than it should be. Would you happen to know a way to get around the "Unknown Trwt" errors?

Let's try to print the value that it is getting.
use print_debug_hex8 to print the value of the "unkown" Trwt you are getting. i.e. print out the value of the variable 'clocks'.
