binutils from gnu.org are a completely different beast compared to "linux binutils" shipped by almost all distributors.
No doubt. But I am compiling coreboot, not Linux.
I think the meaning was "found in Linux" rather than "meant for building Linux."

Long ago, in a galaxy far far away, this was relevant. Nowadays, no one should have a reason not to use binutils mainline.
