Modulation surely works better in cable but I /have/ successfully
used spkmodem over air, it was just long ago and I guess neither
transmitter nor receiver are tested much so maybe something is
broken now..

Sound output from QEMU would be a great test; try -audiodev wav
to save straight to a file; ie. digital lossless transmission.
