In general? Nothing, not necessarily the boot ROM even!
Right. The machine might be booting out of the air.
Or have some overlay in the southbridge (our s-word today), like the xbox does.
Besides that we will never see a port to a machine where ROM is not accessible when the firmware starts. I bet.
