Looks like you found the solution to this one, but I also suggest adding
these these to your ~/.exrc:
colorscheme koehler
set si
set showmatch
set showmode
set ai
set ic

Which version of Etherboot? I think I ran into a version with 5.2.4
where ELF/ZELF images were corrupt no matter which GCC I tried.
