Hi all- I am trying to get myself up to speed on server management in a Linux environment and in my research I keep running across your e-mail list serve. I have been doing a lot of reading and many times the information I am reading is contradictory. I am looking for some definitive answers on the following: 1) Does Linux support IPMI? If so how? 2) Why is their a preference for using Console Port Servers in Linux and Unix, while Windows tends to be KVM? Is their a technical reason or is it simply 1) cost 2) text based management preference through CLI? 3) I read an article on Linux where in the serial section they indicate: "Linux supports ordinary telephone modems only if they work through a serial port (although the port may be built into the modem). Ron, is the T23 running linuxbios? When I joined the list (though I later left) and was reading back-issues, I vaguely remember you as having said you couldn't get it on your lappy due to IBM's chipset detail stinginess; has any/all of that changed, or am I perhaps hallucinating? I have access to a fairly largish supply of A22-M series, and as president of my local student ACM chapter (named Beta Iota Tau, nerdily enough) am desparately searching for more projects for the upcoming semester/year. Short Summary: Does linuxBios work on your T23? If so, can I have all the juicy (or at least some moderately damp) details? TIA, -David H. Barr. >thank you, that did it. VGA BIOS on EPIA 800

Hi everyone, I checked everywhere but I can't seem to find any real information about this.. The current status of LinuxBIOS on the EPIA 800 seems to lack vga output (only serial)? On some other site, I found out that it could work but I should extract the VGABIOS out of the current BIOS and inject it somewhere on the flash (?!). How can I extract the current vga bios on my epia800? I don't have my millenium chip and its adapter yet, but I'm gathering informations right now, just to know what to do once I receive them. It should work with onboard one. You may put the option rom in the EEPROM and set the VGABIOS_START correctly. Floppy drives and Linux BIOS

Hello from Gregg C Levine Here's a question that's definitely going to keep me up nights. Can a properly configured and working Linux BIOS image, boot something else via the floppy drive, in this case a normal 3.5 drive setup as the A drive? Well at least from the point of view of the motherboard with its original BIOS, it would be setup as the A drive. Basically our friends at FSMLabs market the RTLinux kits. They also make available the same thing under the GPL license, I still haven't figured if there is a loss of functionality between the two. At some point they were working on a floppy drive sized version of the product. Before committing to having a working Linux BIOS image based on it, what I am leaning towards is having the chosen image boot the floppy drive sized version, and then facilitate whatever tests I, (or my staff), have in mind. Probably between two or more machines, with one of them being the lucky one with the working Linux BIOS image on it, in place of the commodity BIOS. I suspect they all would need to be the same machine for this to work. And of course the company unofficially tells me that they have actually discontinued work on this floppy drive sized version of their product. Ron, Thanks the clarification. I only move idt.c and vgabios.c and pcbios.c to the freebios2 and make it can be compiled into linuxbios. And it should call the Option rom in MB EEPROM or addon on card's expansion rom. I also find the freebios/util/vgabios. Is that you mean 16 VGABIOS or emulation? Takeshi can perhaps address it better than I. I did look at our three options today: emulation, ADLO, and VGABIOS. VGABIOS is almost 100% C save for the 32-16 trampoline code. ADLO rombios.c is mostly assembly code with C wrappers around it. Emulation is C. Emulation is 256K ADLO is 64K. VGABIOS is much less, something like 16K last time I built it. The functions that VGABIOS needs to finish up to have as complete support as bringing up graphics as ADLO are not that many in number. Which makes sense: what a VGA BIOS needs to do is diddle its own registers, so most BISO functionality is not that useful for them. ADLO will not find the option rom on a card and use it; VGABIOS will. The most portable long-term way to go is emulation. I don't have room. These are the issues I have seen so far. ron

EPIA-M DDR HELP

I hacked the rominit.inc for the epia to configure for my memory configuration i.e 128 Mb on first bank, 128 Mb on second bank ( total 256Mb ), but now rather than hanging when it Disables cache for first time whilst setting up mtrr it restarts continuously.. ,,should I get different ram, or can someone explain the register maps and configuration options in raminit.inc so that I can customize it to my own ddr. Ron, If I only want to use addon AGP Display adapter ROM, I don't need to use VGABIOS? How about PCIBIOS? I don't know about freebios2 tree, but in freebios tree there is some code to call POST routine of external VGA BIOS, and support for some realmode BIOS call (like PCI BIOS) to help the VGA BIOS run happily. It is activated by config like below: option CONFIG_VGABIOS=1 option CONFIG_REALMODE_IDT=1 dir src/bioscall option CONFIG_PCIBIOS=1 option VGABIOS_START=0xfffe0000 The last line is needed when you use the VGA BIOS image from the Flash (typically for onboard VGA). If this option is not defined, VGA card's ROM is used (this is what Ron's original code does). Ron: my last fix to pcibios.c is in the tree and working ok. Thanks. -- Takeshi
