Slowly merging the static and dynamic device trees.

So at first glance the static device tree seems to be pretty usable so now I am investigating what needs to happen to merge the device trees. There is one large area of mismatch though that I don't know if I want to do something about or not. Currently the static device tree is by chip. And the dynamic tree is by logical device. Where this becomes challenging is on chips like the 8131 or the 8111 which have multiple busses hanging off of them. Or even for the simple amdk8 processor which has 3 HT links hanging off of it. And I don't want to mix the children of various busses. For the arima/hdama my static device tree currently like: cpu k8 "cpu0" register "up" = "{.chip = &amd8131, .ht_width=16, .ht_speed=600}" southbridge amd/amd8131 "amd8131" end southbridge amd/amd8111 "amd8111" superio NSC/pc87360 register "com1" = "{1}" register "lpt" = "{1}" end end end cpu k8 "cpu1" end Now that I have something to start with I am busily brainstorming how to glue all this together and make it work. Flash chip identified in BIOS Savior PMC4

Embedded Linux Systems book

Over the weekend I went to the UKUUG Linux Developers Conference in Edinburgh. http://www.ukuug.org/events/linux2003/ Lots of great stuff, including a tutorial by Stephen Tweedie and a BOF we had on clusters and filesystems. Plus whisky and visits to the Festival Fringe :-) I gave a presentation on mini-ITX systems, sadly though I didn't run Linuxbios. Josette Garcia from OReilly UK had her usual stand, with lots of tempting books. As usual, I could not resist adding to my collection. I bought the new 'Building Embedded Linux Systems' http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/belinuxsys/ Reading it on the train journey back home, I tought it is an excellent book. Lots of information on DoC, CompactFlash, filesystems -CRAMFS, JFFS2 etc. and their characteristics, methods of booting and creating bootable CFS, programming BIOSes. Could give people good information on DoC etc. All in all, I would reccomend this book, as there are good general sections on the various architectures Linux runs on, and also an appendix discussing binary-only drivers, and Linus' attitude to them. BTW, was it in this book that I read that from 2.5 kernels Linux will run on MMU-less 68000 CPUs? Time to dust down my old copy of "68000 Assembly Language Programming" from yea long ago...

Using USB Flash drives instead of CF

Has anyone tried using a USB Flash drive instead of CF? I can build a usable 2.6.0-test2 kernel in well under 400kB with USB and SCSI support, and most of the rest as modules. In theory it could just use /dev/sda as the root device, right? Unfortunately, networking adds another 156kB to the size of the compressed kernel, and cannot be built as a module... But I can live without that on a workstation, and etherboot could always be included too. Regards, Jeff

though my motherboard my not be on the list is it not their because it just dosent work? or lack of reasearch, i have a asus a7v333, and a abitkx7333r, both via chipsets, what are the possibilities of getting the linuxbios on them? and could i totaly destroy my computers if im not sucessful? thanks

Hi, I have the custom board (geode sc1200) with peripherals like ethernet, PCI audio video decoder, Tuner, hard disk, SDRAM, Flash memory. I will have to have my BIOS program, linux kernel and specific application program in my Flash memory. I have hard disk only for storing files. My Flash memory is of 32 Mbits and SDRAM 32MBytes. I want to use LinuxBios. I build it for nano mainboard. But still I have many doubts. In normal BIOS, we will say the bios program to load the bootloader from hard disk into location 0000:7C00. What part of the program in Linuxbios will bring my linux kernel image from Flash into SDRAM? Is any options or something to be included in the configuration file to say to boot from Flash memory. In my embedded device the Flash memory is mapped to physical address 00000h to 3FFFFFh. So at what location should i place the linuxbios romimage and linux kernel image in my Flash memory? Where shall my application program be placed in Flash? I hope I should have a filesystem. Is the MTD meant for the filesystem? BIOS Savior works on Tyan Tiger MPX (S2466N-4M)

Folks, I successfully installed a BIOS Savior RD1-PMC4 on my Tyan Tiger MPX (S2466N-4M) today. It works just fine, but I cannot identify the Flash chip on it (0x9d/0x6e) -- if anyone knows how to track this down, I'd love to know. In the meantime I forced it to work with Steven James's flash_tool program. The flash chip that Tyan shipped with the board is a SST49LF040. I presume the RD1-PMC2 would work on the older Tiger MP board. I can't say whether Tyan's DOS-based flash utility works with this beast or not. I can't get it to run at all on my machine -- it complains that himem.sys is loaded, even on a boot disk that doesn't contain himem.sys! I tried a handful of other flash utilities but none of them would ID the BIOS Savior chip for me. Regards, Jeff

Tiger MPX & LinuxBIOS

Howdy, I'm the newbie du jour. I'm attempting to get Linuxbios working on an EPIA 533 and a Tyan Tiger MPX (S2466N-4M). I was able to build an EPIA BIOS w/o trouble using the Howto.
