You really should check out darcs. I did an extensive arch/darcs comparison, and the XWT project (xwt.org) is going with the latter. BTW, if you want super tiny kernels, check out Microsoft's (unpatented, surprisingly well documented) LZX compression format. It's specifically designed to compress x86 machine code, so it beats out all the general-purpose compression algorithms if the payload is a binary. I think libmspack has an LGPL'ed LZX compressor/decompressor. - a ebiederman(a)lnxi.com (Eric W. IDEA: Linux kernel and pcbios compatibility...

Brainstorming earlier today I think I have found a way to use an linux kernel for the boot loader and to implement pcbios compatibility without too much cost. The idea is to use a uclinux kernel. And implement a ``user space'' aplication that is a user space shim that makes kernel calls. There are a few nasty details to work out like how to handle services that are expected to work in vm86 mode. But I'm not certain I care. Other thoughts? After I come back from my christmas vacation I am going to have to try it and see how will it will actually work. Eric

Booting USB keydrive from BIOS

I tried to boot JetFlash ( http://www.transcendusa.com ) with Flonix ( http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/flonix ), but something is wrong, because I only can boot it using a floppy. I have USB boot support in the BIOS. What can I do to boot the keydrive (http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/keydrive ) with Flonix ???? Thanks in advance. ( I think sell bootable USB keydrives with Flonix pre-installed would be a great idea....).

I'd like to run Win2k server on a diskless box. I (unfortunately) need to have a Win2k server box around for testing an app that we develop on Linux but need to (occasionally) deploy on Windows. It's headless, so I just RDP in when I need to test stuff out. I guess I'm interested in the diskless aspect not to save the cost of a hard drive, but just because I like having all my hard disks in one machine. All my linux boxen boot off the network and mount their root partition off of a (very, very fast) RAID-5 array. ide emulation based on network block device for arbitrary OSes?

I've heard that you can use LinuxBIOS to bootload other operating systems (like Windows, etc). Is it possible for LinuxBIOS to boot the device and install a block of code in memory that handles BIOS disk requests using some sort of network block device protocol? Failing this, does anybody know of a cheap hardware device that would do the same thing?
