When v3 has many more hours behind it and we can forget all about v2, then we'll revisit it, but 99.99% of the customers and users here need a solution today, and mkelfimage is it.
Then we keep it. I don't like it, as it has caused real issues over the years as the toolchains keep changing, but if people are using it, then we keep it.
