I've been thinking along the same lines. I still think LAB is the way to go, and I'm very happy to see all the great work Ward has done. I was going to try to close the loop once my home workshop is done (I just moved) and try it once again on my old OLPC units.
But the existing OLPC stuff is indeed bit-rotten.
