Go back to V1 and see what that did.

Here is the sad story. I had to hard-code bits of 8601 setup since if 
you followed the manual, and did things right, the chip would lock up. 
the hard codes made certain dram types not work. Somebody got clever and 
fixed the hardcodes to be dynamic a la spd. From that point on, 8601 has 
been broken. When did this happen? don't know.

But it did work in v1.
