I just came across a 32-pin DIP to 32-pin PLCC adapter that might work for plugging a DOC into a motherboard with a PLCC socket for the BIOS chip.
It's the ADP-32PLCC at http://www.emutec.com/pjetadpt.html
The price is $95 at http://www.embeddedtools.net/ETN_Old/promjet.htm
Cheers, - Jan

Is there still a DOC in production which plugs directly into the ROM

there is not "the" ROM socket, so your question is hard to answer. But yes, there are some mobos left (I THINK) that will take a DOC. Very
few,
however.
