This bit (40) represents a PCI Bus Error.
The data sheet I could find wasn't very helpful, scyld.com/ethercard_drivers.html errata explains the error as:
0040 PCI Bus Error A serious, perhaps unrecoverable error.
No other bits set in the interrupt status register either..
