I've got it waiting on me to do just what you're suggesting. And that's my Git version. Last time I had Slackware-12.2 up it did work.
That git version is from 2009. The world didn't stop turning. It's surprising enough that your system has support for sufficiently new SSL that it could receive that HTTP error instead of already failing at the SSL handshake.
tl;dr: update your system.
