mkelfimage combines the kernel and the init.rd so it an be loaded by kexec.
we have initramfs now. initrd is so 20th century :-)

That is a very closed minded attitude. You may not see a reason for mkelfimage, but it still remains the only way to functionally boot a kernel under v2. When v3 has many more hours behind it and we can forget all about v2, then we'll revisit it, but 99.99% of the customers and users here need a solution today, and mkelfimage is it.
