Well, sort of. From my experience, which very likely most on this list can share, BIOS is used to cover up defects in the hardware. Thus, it's a PR question, not a technical one.
If that is true, maybe they are making much ado about little. Suppose there is a problem in the machine that would only affect users that make changes in the BIOS. That won't be very bad publicity.
