I've had no luck with libgfxinit, but a customised version of Kabylake's VBT (using Intel BMP to modify it to be more like the vendor's configuration) in place of the outdated vendor one got the backlight working.
I guess I can now either try the stock Kabylake VBT or review the customisations.
