Creating users who can edit the pages is going to pass through sysops so we don't have people randomly dropping in and trashing the pages. Plan 9 wiki had a terrible time with this until they locked things down. Every once in a while all the Plan 9 wiki would end up with links to porn sites. ron

Since one of the maintainers is not at Cray, it has been hard to keep it going. sorry about that. ron

I think it would be MOST helpful if the linuxbios web site reflected true and accurate recent information. It appears to be very out of date and doesn't even say how to get to freebios2 IIRC. If I knew more of what WAS true and correct, I would offer to help update the site. But alas, I am just lurking on this mailing list and absorbing what I can... if you see errors let me know (I did not write this but they will take input). I know the comment about linuxbios being stripped-down linux is not quite right; anything else? Nevertheless it is really great to see the FSF weigh in on this issue. If your company is a supporter of linuxbios, or other free bioses such as U-boot etc., then you should definitely contact the FSF and get your name listed. ron

A Four X Solution?

I'm not a lazy person, but very active for an elderly 65er. However I have so many unfinished tasks, which demand my constant attention. Like castrating and branding cockatoos, and tickling crocs to death to save ammunition. Linux is just has to remain one of those things, of which, I must forgo the pleasure . I am working with old (no elderly) thinkpads, and compaq 600 EN small footprint pc's. They are becoming readily available. Banks and insurance companies are literally throwing then out the windows of high rise buildings. Sorry I lie, three story, a skyscraper is about ten. Anyway for my "clientele", people poorer than myself, but not destitute, this seems a pretty good baseline quality. Most of those, like myself have swapped the life of taking for giving. No I'm not a bush ranger. My plan is simply this: I take these working WindowsXPse and XP machines, load up Netscape and Star Office and plug in a nifty LinuxBios. One made in the good old US of A, or is it China these days? Oops sorry they told me not to mention China. So please forget I said anything about china. Then (this is the bit I love) I uninstall Windows. But once I distribute these machines I need to charge them at least one years service agreement. Not from me because my service is free, but from someone who knows Linuxbios like the back of the hand. And who is willing to do the service remotely via say realVNC. Many of these people are from remote farming communities or farmsteads (where the front gate is 100 miles from the front door). If they have one. They must be able to take their machine to town and into an internet cafe, plug it in and watch it being serviced, whilst "downing a cool XXXX" Queenslanders don't give a XXXX for any other beer. I hope they will feel the same about this service. Any takers? Justin Walsh

I bought an IDE based CF adaptor that I should have in the next 2~3 days. Its small and has the laptop style interface (44 pin) and status lights. Software suspend for Linux, gives me stuff like "hibernate" http://softwaresuspend.berlios.de/ I have most every thing compiled into my kernel, there are thing's that I still have as modules, but those are things that I don't need most of the time. When I boot in a normal case the system will be coming out of hibernate, not doing a full boot. This means that software suspend (the program that allows hibernate) will be loading its hibernation image off the disk. Well if that image happens to be the on my 1GB CF card, I need to have ide-cs loaded... Well with the way that software suspend works, it loads about half way through the kernel loading process, ide-cs loads after that. This means that software suspend cant see the CF, yet. I need linuxbios for speed reasons, not the fact that it can boot from CF, but that helps. This is all going into and embedded car computer to play music, GPS, wireless. So first and formost is the boot time.
