For now, I don't want to revisit the discussion of whether it *ought* to be possible; we have never figured out a good way to do it.
I will revisit that problem sometime, but with a patch, not with a discussion.
I'll fix those things you pointed out and do this as one giant commit but from now on try to make small patches.
