Now that I have a working coreboot (sadly without the irda and wacom part -
cf next message), I would like to investigate the whining noise issue.
I have a spare motherboard that I'm setting up for studying this noise
issue by pinpointing from which component it comes from - BTW how would it
be possible to have an autopower on option ? I mean, as soon as the AC
adapter is connecter, start booting - because I don't have a spare keyboard
for this spare motherboard :-)
Some remarks on a X60t using a SSD ie quite silent :
- I have tried physically removing the modem - this introduces a similar
(but less intense) noise using the default bios
- with the x60t on an ultrabase and coreboot, the same noise is heard
until say 30 minutes, then it become silent - I suppose because of the fan
turning on due to the high temperature or automatic power saving features
(acpi -t report 52 C and 55 C while the CPU load is almost 0)
- What's more interesting is then, on this silent X60t, running rmmod
uhci_hcd changes nothing but doing insmod uhci_hcd after that reintroduces
the noise !!
- Even better, as reported on
http://www.kernelconcepts.de/~nils/ibm-x60.html, the UHCI interaction with
ACPI C3 has been a problem in the past :

I will try to read the old patches - maybe the current day uhci module is
not playing nice with acpi on the X60 - for example, going into the
adequate power saving mode only when some specific condition happens (like
on the ultrabase), but by default going into a power saving mode that make
this noise.

I have a server system that runs a VIA processor and I'm not sure what board it has.
From dmidecode, I get a Phoenix Technologies BIOS (v6.00 PG) with a CN700-8237 chipset (appears to be supported?). The processor is a VIA Eden (Linux reports Esther, but BIOS reports Eden) at 800MHz.

From dmidecode, I get a Phoenix Technologies BIOS (v6.00 PG) with a CN700-8237 chipset (appears to be supported?). The processor is a VIA Eden (Linux reports Esther, but BIOS reports Eden) at 800MHz.

There are some Intel atom core devices - Looking at the supported device list, I don't even see a
category for any of these.
I'm guessing that at this time there isn't any chance to find something coreboot might support?

I'm unable to use any USB devices connected to an XHCI controller to resume from S3 standby, as something causes all connected devices to disconnect just prior to entering standby, as per the output of dmesg.
I've traced the relevant sections in the southbridge and ACPI source for my device (a haswell-based ChromeOS device with an Intel lynxpoint southbridge), but have been unable to find the culprit.
CONFIG_FINALIZE_USB_ROUTE_XHCI is set, as this device only has USB3 ports (4x), but having it set either way doesn't make a difference. The usb_xhci_sleep_prepare() call doesn't seem to be the culprit, as commenting it out has no (positive) effect.
Resuming via the power switch or wake on lan work perfectly, so it's not a general resuming issue.
Appreciate any pointers on how to proceed

Heh, Yep, I'm definitely not a lawyer - I wasn't trying to express this
as a fact - I tried to make it clear that this was just my
understanding of the current situation.
I think that using a BSD header on the files that include the microcode
could be fine - I really don't know. It's a stupidly simple file. I've
been talking with Intel about it, but I'm not sure that they really want
to GPL their microcode. I'd imagine that getting permission to do that
would involve a *BUNCH* of lawyers, and what would the implications of
doing that be?
I'm also not sure what the implications of just changing the headers on
the files are... Couldn't someone challenge us doing that? It seems
tricky... I'm pretty uncomfortable with the whole situation - that's
why I was thinking that just making a utility that turns the microcode
files into binaries might be the best solution, but I don't know....
