The versions should be about compatibility. So major version increment would mean that breaking changes were introduced (like removing/changing a command line option or the output/input of the program. minor versions should be incremented whenever it doesn't matter to any shell scripts using this tool whether it changed or not. That could be a new platform or a new feature that is added. Otherwise I don't see why our tooling should have a version in the first place.
