Patch Set 2: Code-Review+1
Nice written Patrick, thank you for that.
Should we mention which scope this proposal targets? I mean do want this scheme be applicable on the "main" branch only or do we consider to take older branches (like 4.11 which is still maintained in some way) into account as well by back-porting affected patches or even introduce new patches where needed?
Let's say that I'm not opposed to people changing branches like that, but I wouldn't require such work on branches. It's a maintenance question (cost of doing the transition, cost of backporting changes in an unconverted tree vs. cost in a converted tree) that needs a case-by-case answer.
Unlike other branches, 4.11 will be needed some time longer due to fsp1.0, but even with that I'm not sure if it matters enough to plan a cleanup for it.
tl;dr: I'd deliberately leave that question open
