CB:74152 uses this in src/cpu where the verstage_x86 target and the other stage targets were used. the scope where thta's used can and probably should be expanded, but it was already later yesterday when i wrote the patches and i mainly wanted to push a proof of concept before the weekend. not sure how to treat makefile targets differently depending on where in the tree they are; unusual makefile things aren't exactly what i'm very familiar with
