using site-local to keep not yet public soc and mainboard support (possibly using submodule) sounds like a significantly better idea than using symlinks which i'd consider a rather bad and probably avoidable practice. since it's probably actively used, it probably won't be easy to get rid of this questionable mechanism again :(
