PS1: Nikolai, please mark this is WIP or abandon as the ichspi piece to this story downstream needs cleaning up before any of this can be presented upstream. It paints a confusing or at best an incomplete picture.
The ichspi part downstream has globals and is fragile currently so needs a bit of work. Furthermore, the ignore_error part is very messy and also needs cleaning up. I believe Damien had some WIP patches for the ignore_error part for ME.
In any case it is better to keep focused on the writeprotect cleanups so upstream has the complete implementation and they are in sync and not worry about this right now.
