I'm using the Intel D848PMB chipset and I'd like to flash the BIOS (because it seems to have gotten a bit messed up after the battery died. I changed the batt but it still doesn't detect hardware well).
I've already checked to see if my chipset is supported, and it is.
Ran "sudo flashrom" and got
-desktop:~$ sudo flashrom flashrom v0.9.1-r946 No coreboot table found. Found chipset "Intel ICH5/ICH5R", enabling flash write... OK. This chipset supports the following protocols: Non-SPI. Calibrating delay loop... OK. Found chip "Intel 82802AB" (512 KB, FWH) at physical address 0xfff80000. === This flash part has status UNTESTED for operations: ERASE Please email a report to flashrom@flashrom.org if any of the above operations work correctly for you with this flash part. Please include the flashrom output with the additional -V option for all operations you tested (-V, -rV, -wV, -EV), and mention which mainboard or programmer you tested. Thanks for your help!

sorry for all this output
hope some of this makes sense and someone can tell me if running the commands
flashrom -r backup.bin
and
flashrom -wv newbios.bin
(on Ubuntu 10.04) would be appropriate.
thanks!

Ran "sudo flashrom" and got
-desktop:~$ sudo flashrom flashrom v0.9.1-r946 No coreboot table found. Found chipset "Intel ICH5/ICH5R", enabling flash write... OK. This chipset supports the following protocols: Non-SPI. Calibrating delay loop... OK. Found chip "Intel 82802AB" (512 KB, FWH) at physical address 0xfff80000.
Flashing should work fine with that chip. We recommend to use a newer flashrom version, but your version should work fine if you can't upgrade easily.

That's strange. A poster named idwer at #flashrom said that it's an old chipset and not supported. Who should I believe? :S

All gents
Thanks again for helping so much. If my chipset is flashable, then does this two step process work?
Read the BIOS image into a file:
$ flashrom -r backup.bin
Write a BIOS image (proprietary or LinuxBIOS) on the ROM chip:
$ flashrom -wv newbios.bin
thanks!

He said "1) r946 is rather old 2) that chip is not known to be erased or written successfully"
This means we did not have a report about the status of the Intel 82802AB. I know that it works reliably in later versions, and the changes since v0.9.1-r946 are minimal. To summarize: It should work.
Regards, Carl-Daniel
ran this:
flashrom -wv newbios.bin
and got this: flashrom v0.9.1-r946 More than one operation specified. Aborting.
what next?

did
flashrom -w newbios.bin
got
newbios.bin: No such file or directory
checked out home directory:
ls
and "backup.bin" is in there. It makes sense that it's in there. The question for me is where bios.bin? I did a search for it on my entire file system and nothing comes up. What does it mean if there is no bios.bin or newbios.bin on my system? What went wrong?
thanks!

You need to obtain that file, the support page for your mainboard is a good place to look for an update.

Hello gents, thanks for your time!
I got to a support page for Intel, checked out "OS independent" BIOS files (at http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=8736&...)
File name: RC86510A.86A.0044.P18.IB.exe Version: P18 Date: 05/05/2005 Status: Latest Size: 0.83 MB Operating Systems: OS Independent, Windows 2000*, Windows 98 SE*, Windows Me*, Windows XP Home Edition*, Windows XP Professional*
Details: Iflash BIOS Update [RC86510A.86A.0044.P18.IB.exe] - A DOS-based utility to update the BIOS regardless of operating system. It requires a blank floppy diskette.
Problem: it's all ".exe".
Any suggestions?

Hello,
Try: `unzip RC86510A.86A.0044.P18.IB.exe' Then: `unzip SW.EXE'
Hmm... although this looks like a signed bios update, and it's an "odd" size... not what would be flashed into a chip. You might not be able to use flashrom for this update... Although it does look like an AMI bios hiding in P18-0044.BIO. Some 512K chunk of that is what you want... I might be able to look more into this later- dinner is calling.

Yes. Re-visit that page [1] and use this download: File name: P18-0044.BIO The file size, however, is 652.776 bytes and as such won't work with flashrom.
