OK, I finally got chance to make a little adapter board for
buspirate->soic16 spi... success!
It would seem that a set of ~20cm BP wires are too long for this to
work reliably, because with the adapter it worked first/every time:

its own software)

This chip's main memory can not be erased/written by design.
