Not much to add, I've also tested this patch and it works (probe + read) 
on my PowerPC Mac Mini.
Apparently a more common machine to run Linux on than I thought!

According to /proc/cpuinfo it is a PowerMac10,1. Detected was a Sharp 
LH28F008BJT-BTLZ1, unlike on your PowerMac10,1.
