are you using a voltage adapter? If not, it might be the flash chip's
overvoltage protection that disables erase. IIRC, the MX25U parts are
1.8V.

However, the addresses in the various attempts flashrom made are
increasing. So it seems it either succeeded randomly or reading
(verification what was erased) is unreliable. How does your overall
setup look like? Is the flash chip in the programmer's/adapter's
socket?
