Just upgraded my BIOS with success (v2.8 -> v2.9) using --force.
No warnings, no problems, rebooting ok, bios confirms new version.

works:
  reading
  verifying
  writing  (with --force)

untested as an isolated operation (but works as part of writing):
  erasing
