Is the OpenBIOS guess correct and SunOS 4.x actually does have an a.out loader?
It shouldn't be a.out. The bootloader (on blocks 1-15) of a Solaris disk is an fcode file (compiled forth).

That would explain it, but are you sure that was already so in the SunOS 4.x times?
