Ah. Sorry, missed the SunOS 4.x comment. That was before my time (I started at Sun in 1994, when we had just transitioned to Solaris 2), so I wouldn't know for sure.
If the first two bytes of the bootloader are "fd 03", it's FCode (That's the "fcode-version3"). Otherwise it may be a.out
