Maybe have both instead of replacing "cdrom"? Did you check G4/G5 and IBM machines?

Several G4 machine trees also use "cd". I didn't find any IBM machine trees in the site.
But having both aliases would be more consistent across architectures. The same applies to "hd" vs. "disk".
