Hi,
Can anybody advise me on this ?
What is the absolute minimum I need to do to get OFW running on a new system ? Just to set up memory, the serial console and get the OK prompt ?

By new system, do you mean a platform based on an already-supported CPU instruction set, or a new CPU instruction set?
It is correct that the first step I take is to get memory and serial port working, thus getting directly to an OK prompt.
The steps necessary to get there depend strongly on the core logic hardware, particularly the memory controller and bus bridges. A generic answer is impossible; it is all hardware-dependent.
