My opinion on this is that if one wants to run old DOS programs then
they really should be running them under QEMU.

When it comes to emulating the interfaces (eg, usb keyboard, video
with coreboot native init, video over serial adapter) then in my
opinion the goal is support for the bootloaders of more modern OSes -
WinXP and later (ntldr), lilo, syslinux, and grub.
