[openfirmware] ofw olpc net booting question

I'm seeing something that seems incorrect.  If I run
    net boot:,\path
or
    net boot:,\path,
it fails with "The DHCP server did not specify a boot server".  However
if I run
   net boot:,\path,1.2.3.99
specifying a local IP address, it succeeds.  Shouldn't it fill in the
address if I dont give it one?  DHCP is assigning me one.
