[flashrom] flashrom stops/hangs

while trying to flash a chip (winbond W25Q32.v), on a arduino uno r3, the
TX and RX led's will be on while flashrom is running normally,  but will
almost always turn off and flashrom in the terminal will stop all activity

any suggestions?
