btw i have submitted patches to the flashrom ml that allow layout files
to be used for read operations too. layout files are small configuration
files with address ranges and names that were introduced to allow
writing to parts of the flash only. but of course calculation + dd is
the better way to do this, especially if the data is on disk and not on
a flash chip ;)
