The wiring of the codec is mainboard specific and all Windows and Linux
drivers expect the BIOS to set up the Azalia codecs, or sound will not
work correctly. This is not something that could be probed by the OS
otherwise.

Oh, that is absolutely what we do. If the mainboard porters care to do
their job right. However many people assume that they don't have to
worry since they don't use a certain feature for their project and just
leave it as it is.
