Hm. I was successful installing SUSE 9 on an AMD64 system (Solo) using
filo and I described some stuff here:

One thing that might be worth trying is to disable the nmi watchdog and
machine check exceptions via linux kernel boot parameters, ie with
     nmi_watchdog=0 nomce 
and probably 
     acpi=off
